Business Class Desktops and Laptops VS Consumer Brands of the Same

Sep 4, 2020

Most people when they hear the term “business class computers” think that they are designed to do things that consumer class computers cannot. Both consumer class and business class can do the same things. Business class computers have several things that are very important to businesses. When a business buys computers they are usually buying in bulk. It might be 25 or 2500 but they are buying these computers to last longer than a single consumer might expect. Business class computers are generally built better and are easier to upgrade. Lets take a laptop as an example, a Dell Latitude or an HP Elitebook or probook can usually be opened for service without any tools. Hard drives, ram, cpu fan and most parts can be upgraded or replaced easier. Most Dell and HP laptops can accept different processors. If the times change and a business needs to upgrade to an Intel i7 from an Intel i5 all they need to do is buy the processor and not a new computer.

The easiest way to spot a business desktop from a consumer desktop is the business desktop has more medal and less plastic. Business class laptops and desktops usually cost a little more but are well worth the price. Now there are many super powerful consumer computers like but not limited to gaming computers. They are still consumer class and not made as well. In my repair business I repair 10 consumer class computers to every 1 business class unit. It is very common for a CPU “Computer Processing Unit” fan to start slowing down and that causes the computer to run hot and eventually shut down. These fans are usually on the bottom of the motherboard is a consumer class laptop. I have to take the whole computer apart to replace or clean the fan. In the business class laptop the bottom usually slips off without any tools or maybe two screws to expose the CPU fan. The really big difference between business class desktops and consumer class is longevity. They just run a lot longer before they need to be serviced.

Today used business class computers cost about the same as consumer class. Business class Dell Desktops Optiplex models HP desktops Elitedesk. Dell laptops Latitude HP laptops Elitebooks and Probooks.
